A Birthday Letter to Michael Vartan
From Musicat
Things I love about Michael:
Your kindness and caring for others as seen not only in the large amounts of time you put into your charity work but also in the way you treat people; the way you interact with others in interviews and personal appearances shows a real liking for people and an openness to others which is a real inspiration.
You are a team player and I don't mean just sports. You always recognize the contributions of others you work with (even when they don't reciprocate!). You always go out of your way to express your respect for your colleagues, especially re Alias. I remember being impressed during an appearance during the third season when a clip of you and Melissa George was shown; the interviewer didn't mention her by name but you quickly made sure she got a mention. It was so gallant and sweet!
And that reminds me of another thing I admire: your quick wits AND wit! You are very fast on your feet and amazingly articulate. You're very witty and clever and fun-loving. You seem to love to talk and I love that; I think it's part of your liking people and it's cool how well you handle interviewers -- it's also clear, by the way, how much the interviewers like you! They're more sensitive to you than other people and I think it's because you are sensitive to them.
Your love for animals. I'm a nut for them too, and I love how you adore Millie and talk about her and do so much for her. It was especially cool how excited you were to show her the Stanley Cup! Millie is a "lucky dog!"
I admire your involvement with friends and family. You clearly have a lot of good relationships and are very supportive of your firends and they of you. I'm especially thinking of Greg Grunberg. It's clear how much you've been there for him and he for you. And you guys are a hoot together!
Last but not least, I love your quietly intense acting. You are so natural I don't think people get how good you are. One of my favorite scenes is in "One Hour Photo" when the police bring Will home. There is no dialogue but you are amazing. One can see each of Will's emotions -- relief, regret, shame, fear, hope, etc. -- on your face. And your love for your son. It's one of the most moving scenes I've ever seen. And I'm furious with Alias for not using the deleted scene last year when Sydney tells you in the office about the taking it slow. Again, without words your face shows your emotional struggle moment by moment and was totally engrossing and moving. You don't chew the scenery but you're as powerful as anybody.
Wishing you the happiest birthday ever!
