Cinema on life support

No Australian film from the past five years has earned more than $10 million, writes Sandy George

AT a function in Sydney to announce the nominees for this year's AFI Awards, a trio of film-makers was overheard marvelling at the broad range of Australian films that were earning respectable box-office takings.

Ten paces away, an executive from a big cinema chain was bemoaning the embarrassingly low ticket sales for Australia's dark and drug- ridden films.

These divergent opinions nicely illustrate how no one can agree on the state of Australian film.

...

Several big films likely to be popular are in planning, including director Baz Luhrmann's untitled epic and Phillip Noyce's Dirt Music. There is early buzz around Greg Mclean's nearly finished crocodile chiller, Rogue, the follow-up to Wolf Creek.
