ROGUE's McLean to helm DARK FORCES

By Michael Helms and Sean Decker

The industry site TrackingB.com reported a short time ago that WOLF CREEK/ROGUE director Greg McLean (pictured) has been tapped to helm the feature DARK FORCES: BATTLES OF WWII, a war/horror hybrid from fellow Aussie and scribe Chris Wheeler (whose co-wrote the 2003 Down Under horror short FUEL and scripted and co-directed the 1994 Holocaust drama IN LIVING MEMORY). Fango caught up with McLean, who—after recently spending several weeks in the U.S. taking meetings to work out precisely what his next project will be—was somewhat bemused to learn of the news. “That’s cheeky, but I like it,” the director tells us, stressing that the official announcement of his next project is “three or four months away, maybe more.” But he does acknowledge that DARK FORCES is a definite contender among several, before speculating that the source of the information must have attended one of those meetings.

While McLean has previously expressed to Fango his interest in contributing to an Australian fright anthology being put together by a fellow countryman/filmmaker who has more than a little experience directing horror internationally (you’ll learn more about that in Fango’s pages via our forthcoming set report on STORM WARNING), McLean does seem honestly grateful that people are interested in what he does. He also points out that there were no major battles in Australia during WWII, the implication being that DARK FORCES might become his first film to be shot outside of his home territory.

Regarding his killer-crocodile pic ROGUE and its U.S. debut (last cited here as a DVD and possible theatrical release under the Weinstein Company’s new Dimension Extreme banner), McLean claims that it should go out sometime in October, after the Weinsteins have carefully monitored its August Australian release. McLean says ROGUE will receive a huge push from Roadshow, its Down Under distributors; meanwhile, keep you eyes on this site over the next couple of weeks, as we hope to bring you a world exclusive regarding ROGUE.
