The Best of 2002: The 10 Best TV Shows
by Ken Tucker
Thanks to Jenna47 at TWoP for the heads-up.
2. Alias (ABC) Lacking the cable-TV freedom of time-period competitor ''The Sopranos,'' ''Alias'' creator J.J. Abrams has still made each episode of ''Alias'' suspenseful and sexy without crossing that blurry standards-and-practices line (here it helped that star Jennifer Garner can do Emmy-worthy emoting even while encased in bondage evening wear). Abrams himself is under more constraints than David Blaine in an escape-artist trap devised by Ricky Jay: He had to reexplain his series' interlocking subplots every week while still slaking his cult's desire for more, more, more (here it helps that Abrams is matched only by Joss Whedon as a broadcast-TV storyteller). On top of that, Abrams had to deepen his debut season's emotions by introducing Garner's TV mom, a master spy, without seeming silly (here it helped that he cast Lena Olin in the year's finest recurring-guest-star role). Mission impossible? No -- mission accomplished.

3. Alias (ABC) Just when you thought spy Sydney Bristow's family couldn't become any more dysfunctional, along comes Lena Olin as her long-lost double-agent mom. Olin's heartbreaking work brings new meaning to her best movie's title: ''Enemies: A Love Story.''

The Best of 2002: The Best 10 TV Moments
by Ken Tucker
9. JENNIFER GARNER GETS A MOMMY The statuesque "Alias" star already had a spy-dad with whom she's had her differences, but bringing the first-rate actress Lena Olin in to play Garner's traitorous spy-mom was the casting coup of the year. Olin doesn't only bear the right amount of resemblence to Garner make the bloodline believable, but she turned a possibly campy plot turn into another marvelous hairpin-turn in this delightfully twisty adventure series.

50 THINGS TO LOVE ABOUT TV
by Matt Roush
The week I was born, TV Guide's cover asked, "What Good Are Television Critics?" A cosmic joke? I'm still laughing. Looking back on a lifelong love affair with TV, I dwell on the positive — the sights, sounds, shows, people and events that shaped this incredible medium and made a profound impact on those of us who couldn't get enough. Here are many (though hardly all) of my favorites. A wasted life? I don't think so.
20. Alias Costume Changes
For great escapism, nothing beats following double agent Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) on an exotic spy mission — if only to see what knockout outfit they've put her in. The wigs alone could bankrupt a lesser nation.

TV Gal Has Seen the Rest, Now She Lists the Best
by Amy Amatangelo, Zap2it
I've made my list, I've checked it twice. And in the spirit of the holidays, I'm only talking about what's nice. Here's my list of the best of everything television.
Best Partner: Dixon on "Alias." I might start a petition and demand we see more of his character. Who is with me?
Best Tech Geek: Marshall on "Alias."
Quotes of the Week
"I'm writing my dissertation. Supposedly." Sydney when her mom asks how school is going on "Alias." Well, I'm delighted we finally had some recognition that Sydney has had no time for school lately. Now we need to work on the fact that Sloane should be mighty suspicious about Sydney's constant absences. The girl is never at SD-6 headquarters.

The Hollywood Exclusive
December 9, 2002
BY MARILYN BECK AND STACY JENEL SMITH
MAN ON THE MOVE: It looks as if life is imitating art on some level
for Carl Lumbly, who plays SD-6 Agent Marcus Dixon on ABC's spy
series "Alias." The actor, whose character travels to remote
locations around the world for international espionage, is also quite
the traveling man in real life. The actor, who lives in Berkeley,
Calif., with his actress wife Vonetta and their 14-year-old son
Brandon, commutes to the series' Los Angeles set and location shoots
by plane or automobile two or more times a week.
Declares Lumbly, "When I come to L.A., I'm very focused on my work.
Five years ago, when we lived here, I felt that my career focus moved
my wife and son out of my clear field of vision, and I couldn't have
that because I wanted to do well by them. My wife has relatives in
San Francisco, and we have a lovely place there, and, most
importantly, Brandon has access to the outdoors and wonderful
schools. I'm always home through the weekend, and whatever hardship I
may endure getting back and forth never seems so bad once I'm home."

TV Gal's Quotes of the Week
"This watch belonged to my father. It's broken now, but it used to keep perfect time. And when he gave it to me, he said you could set your heart by this watch. It stopped October 1st. The day we met." Vaughn with a lump in his throat to Sydney on "Alias." Her response? "Me too." People, we have acknowledgement of their love for each other. I repeat we have acknowledgement of their love for each other. I'm not sure I like The Mom playing matchmaker though.
