Catch Me If You Can snippet

Thanks to Whoosh at JenniferGarner.

...

Happily, DiCaprio's "Catch Me If You Can" co-star, Jennifer Garner, is less discreet. In their new movie, the star of TV's "Alias" plays a high-class hooker who divests his con-man character of his virginity.

"It's always awkward when you find yourself making out with someone that you've only met a couple of hours ago," she tells us. "But I'm trying to justify it to myself by saying that the real-life characters had only met for a couple of hours, as well. It would have been awkward except that he's so lovely."

(Apparently his bedroom manners have improved since his "Titanic" co-star Kate Winslet complained about "smelly, farty Leo.")

Here are TV's five biggest surprises -- In a fall season that seems strangely familiar, Ken Tucker counts down his notable exceptions

The new fall TV season is officially the new familiar TV season, so that means it's time to note some of the biggest surprises that debuting and returning series have brought us. Here are my Top 5 Biggest Surprises of the Fall TV Season.

5. You All Aren't Watching ''Alias'' I'm surprised this series hasn't moved from cult to solid-hit status. The new season is even stronger than its mighty first; the family tensions between Syd (Jennifer Garner), her dad (Victor Garber) and her spy-in-from-the-cold mom (Lena Olin) have been richly emotional. Come on, America -- HBO subscribers can tape ''The Sopranos,'' and the rest of you can let one ''Law & Order'' franchise show drop from your regular TV viewing. ''Alias'' is the show to be watching!

Alias Revives Grunberg

Greg Grunberg, whose character, CIA Agent Weiss, was shot on ABC's Alias, told SCI FI Wire that his character will return. "I'm not dead, which is a good thing," Grunberg said in an interview. "It was a flesh wound. Lena Olin [who plays Irina Derevko] shot me in the neck, and it grazed me, didn't pierce the skin. That's sort of a sneak thing, so Weiss lives."

Weiss returns in episode 12 of the current season. Naturally, Grunberg feels the character is vital to the show. "I love that I'm somewhat of a character of comic relief in the way that I was at the beginning of Felicity," he said, referring to his role of Sean on the WB series. "But at the same time, I'm Vaughn's [Michael Vartan] confidant, and he's got to have someone to talk to about all the heavy stuff. That's what I like about it." Alias airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. on ABC.

Watch with Wanda

Rave of the Week: This Sunday's Alias episode is a makeup artist's dream. Literally. Just ask Jennifer Garner, who calls the episode "Sydney Goes Geisha": "My makeup artist had an idea last year, and she told [executive producer] JJ Abrams about it. And we all thought, It'll never happen."

But it did, and as a result, we'll get to see Sydney's most elaborate getup yet: a geisha costume that required nearly six hours in hair, makeup and wardrobe, with some extra help from the real deal. "It couldn't have been cooler or more authentic," Garner says. "We had real geishas come in and teach us how to walk and talk. I spoke Japanese."

Servant Class

By Willam Keck

Jennifer Garner's alias -- fashion-plate superspy Sydney Bristow -- is turning Japanese, for one episode anyway. "Sydney's going geisha," says Garner of Nov. 17's Alias. "It couldn't have been cooler. Real geishas taught us how to walk, talk, and speak Japanese." The famously alluring Eastern look appealed to Garner's hubby. "She brought home pictures," says ex-Felicity hunk Scott Foley. "I grew up in Tokyo, so I'm definitely intrigued by Japanese women." Costumes aside, what are geishas really like? "I left Japan when I was 5," bemoans Foley, "so I never got to find out."

BY MARILYN BECK AND STACY JENEL SMITH

TV TRAUMAS: "Alias" father figure Victor Garber shrugs off the series' weakening ratings. "ABC seems to be pleased," he says. "Some executives do want to change our timeslot, and others don't, but in general, the network seems happy the way things are going."

The way things are, the Canadian-born actor who's achieved repeated acclaim on the Broadway stage is having a heavier workload on "Alias" than he did last season. With Lena Olin now aboard as Jennifer Garner's mother, "the writers are focusing more on the family dynamic. We're going on missions together, and it looks like they will stay on that path for a while. I love it, but I am worn out."
