Rising: Keep an eye on these entertainment movers and shakers who are swiftly ascending their industry ladders

Jennifer Garner: Apparently, there's this little TV show called Alias -- God knows if anyone's watching, but we hear she's good. So good, in fact, that she's already taken home a Golden Globe for best dramatic actress on TV. So good that Spielberg's already cast her in December's Catch Me If You Can. So good that a costarring role in the upcoming superhero saga Daredevil (as Ben Affleck's double-bladed nemesis/love interest Elektra) already has producers talking about a possible spin-off franchise. If we were partial to puns, we'd use electrifying here.

Quotes

(Celebrities are asked to define the word "power")

Michael Vartan, Alias: "Being able to say 'No' to anything."

Salaries

Jennifer Garner (will get) around $3 million for 13 Going on 30.

Television Q&A

By Norma Cavazos

Q: Who is the woman who portrays Sydney Bristow's mother on "Alias? Is she the same woman that was on "General Hospital" as Anna Devane? If it is not the same woman, who is she and what shows has she been in? -- K.F., Cincinnati, Ohio

A: Swedish-born actress Lena Olin has joined the second-season cast of "Alias" as Irina "The Man" Derevko, mother of double agent Sydney Bristow (played by Jennifer Garner). Olin's film work includes "Chocolat," "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" and "Enemies: A Love Story," for which she received an Oscar nomination. She recently completed filming "The United States of Leland" with Kevin Spacey. That was Finola Hughes who played the soap character Anna Devane.

Shaming shameless commerce

BY MARK MILLER, Special To The Examiner

Thanks to Whoosh at JenniferGarner for the heads-up.

...

A slicker example of blending product and story occurred in ABC's spy show "Alias," which has a placement deal with cellphone maker Nokia.

In an underground garage, star Jennifer Garner spots a suspicious-looking man speaking into his cellphone. A close-up of her Nokia's screen, however, reveals a "No service" message. Her stalker is faking it.

The audience holds its breath, while somewhere Nokia marketeers exchange high-fives as their product's brand name commands the screen for three valuable seconds.

Watch With Wanda: grill, gossip & gripe

Double Your Pleasure: Yet another reason the Angel vs. Alias battle will be so cruel this season: On top of Alias' knockout season premiere and the genius addition of Lena Olin, it sounds like Bradley Cooper and Michael Vartan will be sharing some screen time this season.

While talking to Bradley about the direction his character will take this season, he revealed an upside to Will getting put through the espionage ringer. "Will is completely in that world now," he said. "His life is shattered. But the best thing is I'm working a lot more with this Michael. He and I are like best friends, so it's great. We were just doing this scene together on Friday, and it was wonderful. I have no idea where it's going, but for now, it's awesome."

Sounds like Vaughn and Will won't be strangers for long. Wonder who'll throw the first punch over Sydney...and if he'll be hot and sweaty while doing it.

TV networks spin new shows with Web-site video clips

By Jefferson Graham, USA TODAY

Thanks to kenyaja on TWoP for the heads-up.

From longer USA Today article about networks putting video up on their Web sites:

Real Networks has made a business of selling video and audio on the Web. Formerly free footage from ABC News, Fox Sports, CNN and E! is now part of a $9.95-a-month subscription plan.

Real's Scott Erlich predicts that by year's end, a network will do the same for a series. "My wife and I are fans of (ABC's) Alias. We missed one episode last year and spent four months trying to catch it in reruns. Would I pay for on-demand access to that show? You bet."

'Robbery' looks great, but 'Boomtown' is the better show

By Charlie McCollum

Thanks to Plechazunga at TWoP for the heads-up.

• By far the best opening episode of any new or returning network show comes Sunday with the season debut of "Alias'' (9 p.m., Ch. 7). This is pure entertainment at its best: a high-octane hour that starts with double agent Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) having a rather memorable reunion with her evil (or maybe not) mother (Lena Olin of "Chocolat'') and simply takes off from there. And don't worry if you're new to this fine series, because creator J.J. Abrams manages to cleverly recap all of Year 1 in the first half-hour without slowing things down.

Critic's Corner

By Robert Bianco

With many thanks to akatolstoy.

I was almost over the injustice of Jennifer Garner's Emmy loss. Then I watched her in the fabulous season premiere of Alias (ABC, Sunday, 9 p.m. ET/PT), and it brought it all back to me. If, like the Emmy voters, you have resisted Alias' charms so far, this is a great chance to drop in. The episode uses a clever framing device to catch you up while still pushing the action forward. And believe me, few shows work more action, adventure and sheer viewing pleasure into a single hour than Alias. With the addition of Lena Olin as Sydney's not-so-maternal mom, and a new plot twist for Bradley Cooper's Will, the show seems ready to be even better than last year. Keep a remote handy so you can watch Alias at 9 and then switch to NBC for Boomtown at 10.

Zap2it Readers Picks Differ from Emmy Voters

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) -
Huh? While it seems that TV fans wouldn't jump at the chance to shower HBO's "Six Feet Under" with Emmy gold either, they definitely expected Academy voters to stray a little bit from such standards as "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "The West Wing."

'CSI: Miami' Is Year's Budding Hit

By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - "CSI: Miami," which premieres Monday night on CBS, is the new fall show with the best chance to become a hit.

That's the unanimous opinion of five experts asked about which of the 34 new programs on broadcast networks have the greatest and least chance at success, as well as which existing show will have a breakout season.

...

Adgate [Brad Adgate, senior vice president of the advertising firm Horizon Media] sees big things for "Alias" on ABC, which desperately needs a hit.

"I think Jennifer Garner is really the next big star," he said. "This is on a good night (Sundays). It's against 'The Sopranos,' which will hurt it initially, but once 'The Sopranos' runs its course, I would expect 'Alias' to kick it up a notch. TV is becoming very celebrity-oriented, and I think she's going to be a big celebrity. She already is."

GoldDerby.com predicts Jennifer Garner will win an Emmy!

Thanks to Whoosh! :)

Best actress, drama series

"Energetic "Alias'' star Garner roughs up bad guys, weeps over her slain fiance and confronts her father's duplicity while living a double life as a student-spy in the show's pilot. Brava! Rachel Griffiths inexplicably picked a "Six Feet Under'' episode in which she's in relatively few scenes and is sullen in most of them. Allison Janney, who shifted to this category after winning supporting actress honors last year, can't escape the ensemble spirit of "The West Wing.'' The Emmy goes to Garner. "
