Emmy Nominees
Jennifer Garner "Alias"
NOMINATED FOR Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama
WHY EMMY GOT HIP TO HER As Sydney Bristow, the double agent of ABC's hit, Garner has to change emotions almost as often as she has to change outfits. There's sneaky Sydney, who slinks in to high-security spots using myriad disguises. There's tough Sydney, kicking baddies' butts and taking names. But most surprisingly, there's softie Sydney -- an emotionally vulnerable young woman trying to connect with her cold-fish father. Garner's gift? Making all three Sydneys seamlessly unite into one of TV's most compelling characters.

Wanda's Tipsheet
SPOILERS!
9. Mommy Dearest: The mother of all dysfunctional families is now complete, as Lena Olin joins the Alias cast, playing Sydney's (Jennifer Garner) deliciously evil mom. "Lena has added so much to the show," Michael Vartan says of his new costar. "She is just so incredibly strong and tough and beautiful. She's kicking some ass." Expect her reappearance (and continued interaction with her daughter) to throw a hefty wrench into Vaughn (Vartan) and Sydney's already troubled love affair--don't forget Momma Bristow killed Vaughn's dad. As for the other jaw-dropping cliffhangers--Emily (Amy Irving) and Vaughn's apparent deaths--there's only one funeral in the premiere. (Pssst...here's a hint: Vartan's still under contract.) So, that leaves us with one question: Is Emily really gone for good? "It depends what you mean by 'gone,' " executive producer JJ Abrams says playfully. "It sure looked to me like Sloane (Ron Rifkin) killed her." Alias returns September 29.

Buzz cut for MGM: "Barbershop' No. 1
MGM's "Barbershop" was clearly a cut above the rest this weekend at
the boxoffice in North America as the Ice Cube starrer exceeded
expectations and debuted with a sterling $20.63 million to take the
top spot. The long-legged "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" from IFC
continued to woo audiences, as the sleeper hit took in $10.77 million
and placed second for the third consecutive frame. Fox
Searchlight's "One Hour Photo" went into wide release this weekend, a
move that paid off in a big way at the boxoffice. The distributor
added 1,039 theaters, bringing the count to 1,212, and developed
$8.01 million to place third. Last week's winner, "Swimfan" fell to
fourth this week with a $6.05 million take. Sony's "Stealing Harvard"
was the only other wide release this weekend. The comedy, starring
Jason Lee and Tom Green, opened in 2,366 theaters but was not at the
head of its class, as it pulled in a muted $6.04 million to place
fifth.
Following are the top 10 movies for the weekend of September 13-15,
their distributors, weekend grosses, total grosses, and weeks in
release, according to Nielsen EDI.
1. "Barbershop," MGM, $20.63 million, $20.6 million, 1 week.
2. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," IFC Films, $10.77 million, $110.4
million, 22 weeks.
3. "One Hour Photo," Fox Searchlight, $8.01 million, $14.6 million, 4
weeks.

Naked Truth
In a disturbing scene in his new film One Hour Photo, Robin Williams' oddball photo technician snaps some au naturel pics of Michael Vartan's philandering husband. But, despite the dark overtones of the shoot, the funnyman went out of his way to ease the tension on the set. "Robin must've done a 25-minute monologue on how the air-conditioning must have been too high," recalls Vartan, who also plays Jennifer Garner's CIA handler on Alias. As for Williams, he says he knows better than to pose nude himself. "I'm a tad furry," he explains, "so animal rights issues come into play. You'd get a lot of people saying 'Why are you wearing fur?'"

Cool spell hits as summer wanes
...
Meanwhile, Fox Searchlight -- which successfully launched two awards contenders, "Sexy Beast" and "The Deep End," last summer -- is trying to turn a similar double play. Having introduced Jennifer Aniston's "The Good Girl" two weekends ago, this week it is beginning a slow platform for the Robin Williams vehicle "One Hour Photo." Directed by Marc Romanek -- who has handled videos for Nine Inch Nails and Madonna ( news - web sites) -- the R-rated drama stars Williams in a decidedly noncomedic turn as a photo-lab developer who becomes obsessed with a family whose film he regularly scans. It opened Wednesday in New York and scared up a solid $20,447 in two theaters.

Coming TV season could seal ABC's fate
...
That hurts. Rerun sales from long-running hits make up for the big losses producers incur on shows that don't last more than three years and thus don't have enough episodes to sell.
ABC is confident that the pipeline will start to flow again if it can get a few more years of episodes from shows that were launched last year, including Scrubs (which Touchstone produces for NBC), My Wife and Kids, According to Jim and Alias.
''That money is going to go straight to the bottom line,'' Braun says, ''assuming that Alias and Scrubs continue to perform at the levels they have been.''

Alias moving to another night?
Thanks to Corinne for the coverage! :)
There was a small Alias snippet in yesterday's USA Today life section, in the chat w/Robert Bianco. Someone asked about rumors concerning that Alias may move to another night (?!). Robert Bianco said that he'd heard nothing of the move. He said that he heard that ABC was happy w/the ratings Alias got when we were getting new episodes but then the rerun ratings have been dismal. :(

Marifel's Recap of San Diego Comic-Con's "Alias" session
August 3, 2002
Marifel, Vartan Ho #18, was lucky enough to attend the "Alias" session at
this year's San Diego Comic Convention, and she recapped the experience at
her site, which you can visit here.
Following are some of the highlights (warning: may contain mild spoilers):
Slated to appear were: JJ Abrams, Bradley Cooper, Kevin Weisman, and Greg Grumberg...
Who actually showed: JJ Abrams, Kevin Weisman, Jesse Alexander, Brian Burke...
The forum began with a Season 2 teaser trailer!!! My heart jumped out of my chest.
This is where I'm pissed at myself for not bringing some sort of recording device.
I know you're pissed at me too, but I'm sure someone out there did and will post
better details shortly, if it hasn't already been done! All I remember is seeing
Syd, then a blurb about Syd, Jack, something about what kind of Dad Jack is, an image
of Mom from ATY, blurb, then something like "a family of spies," and "one dysfunctional
family." The clip then goes on to show a multitude of scenes from Season 1 and the
date for the Season 2 premiere. Aaack! Oh yeah, also mentioned the 11 Emmy nods the
show received!
Everything from how Alias was conceived to what to anticipate in the future was discussed...
books, action figures (2 12" Syd dolls, 1 set 6" ATY Syd and Vaughn dolls), trading cards
(due out in December), new webgame (free for download on ABC.com sometime soon~ search, explore,
and kick ass!), and possible DVD and soundtrack release.
We were also shown a series of outtakes from last season. HYSTERICAL... Lots of laughing and an
occasional f-word or two... If you're living in S/V Shipper-land: MV and JG redid several scenes
with an "I love you" and a kiss! (Think "The Prophecy," after the Vatican break-in, in front of
the warehouse and "Next time we're in Rome..." Another was from "Mea Culpa", Syd and Vaughn sitting
at the outdoor cafe and a "wanna make out?" line was thrown in.)
JJ and Co didn't go into details about Season 2, but did prepare us for one heck of a ride... What I
got out of the discussion:
1. Will won't be in the CIA.
2. There is another person will be "investigating" and Will has to deal with it.
3. Sloane may not be Syd's biological dad, but there definitely are lots of secrets behind his "paternal" feelings for Syd.
4. More Marshall!
5. Not as many life and death clifhangers, because, come on, Syd can't hang off a cliff every episode and
survive each and everytime. JJ said he was going for more of a full circle in each ep, but wanted
to include a sample for what's to come in the next ep. Likened it to watching old "Batman" shows. "Tune in next time..."
Other stuff:
1. JJ's fave guest star was Roger Moore. "Come on! He's James Bond!!!"
2. Kevin's fave guest star was Peter Berg. (Didn't say why, but my guess was to see what kind of rise he could get out of the audience.)
3. Burkie on Felicity was modeled after Brian Burke because he hits on anything that has boobs...
4. Jesse Alexander's fave eps are the last few of the season.
5. Will is basically in the position where the audience was last season. He's
going to have to deal with this person who is nosing around Syd's business...
6. Someone from Alias Fan Forums was there, too and asked JJ if he reads what
goes on the various fan boards and forums. According to JJ, he does and
thinks of them as great tools... take a look at the Will storyline. The
writers and JJ made adjustments to the storyline after reading all the "I
Hate Will" stuff that had been posted.
7. TPTB know where the story will go thru Season 2 and beginning of Season 3.
Thanks to Marifel!

Stars and Gripes:
Sizzlin' Scoop from the Networks' Annual Bash
Francie Pants: Talk about being a party waiting to happen.
Merrin Dungey, aka Francie on Alias, was chatting about the 11
Emmy nominations the show received that very morning (hurrah!), when
the night's first booty-shakin' tune pumped out over ABC's sleepy
soiree. "Oh, God, I love this song!" she squealed,
instantaneously breaking into a groove the size of the Grand Canyon.
Within five minutes, the ho-hum gathering turned into a raging boogie
fest, with Merrin surrounded by other ABC actors, execs, publicists
and yes, even a few, um, mature TV critics who can find the
beat about as easily as the WB.
Vartanwich with Relish, Please! For an Aliasaholic,
there's only one thing better than suddenly finding yourself standing
between Michael Vartan and Bradley Cooper at the ABC party: Hearing
that they're just as obsessed. "I'm the same exact way!" Bradley said
when I told him how difficult it was to wait for new Alias
eps. "I have to stop myself from watching reruns. It doesn't matter
if I've seen something a thousand times, if it's on and I'm home, I
will get sucked in. It's sick." Hear that noise? It's the sound of my
heart exploding.

Best and Worst Hair 2002
By Serena Kappes
Need a Lift?
Jennifer Garner kicks butt on ABC's Alias and should have done the same to the
hairstylist (if she even had one) who presumably gave her the blah tresses she
sported at the People's Choice Awards in January. The stunning actress's chestnut
hair just hangs there, doing nothing to frame her chiseled face.

Television Q&A
By Norma Cavazos
Q: Sarah Shahi who played Jenny on "Alias" seems to have been written
out of the series. I really liked her and was wondering if she will
be acting on another series or in a movie any time soon? _ An
admirer, via e-mail
A: The former Dallas Cowboy cheerleader (1999-2000) is moving forward
with her acting career. Besides "Alias," Shahi has been on screen
in "Boston Public," "Spin City," "Maybe It's Me" and "Off Centre."
Her comedy pilot, "Class of '06," didn't make the cut for NBC's fall
schedule, but she'll be in the big-screen comedy "Old School" with
Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn. The movie is scheduled
for an early 2003 release.

ABC is planning a promotional blitz!
By Gail Pennington
Eager to increase viewership after losing 22 percent of its audience
last season, ABC has sought changes from many producers of new and
returning series. But "no one has been asked to add a cute, fluffy
white dog to their show to make it more appealing," (ABC
entertainment president Susan) Lyne said.
....
ABC is also planning a "promotional blitz" for fall, including
changing its trademark yellow logo to add other colors. Beyond
graphics, 20 divisions of the Walt Disney Co. will help to promote
the network's fall shows. "Believe me, nobody's looking forward to a
new television season more than we are," says ABC Entertainment
chairman Lloyd Braun.

Emmy's
favorite: 'Six Feet Under' -- With 'The Sopranos' out of the running,
some new faces get a chance
By Alan Sepinwall
Switching categories also worked for Allison Janney of "West Wing," a
two-time winner for drama supporting actress who decided it was time
to move up a notch to lead actress, where she was nominated with
Conroy, Griffiths, "Alias" spy Jennifer Garner and Amy Brenneman
from "Judging Amy."
....
With people like Janney and the "Friends" moving up to lead, and "The
Sopranos" cast taking a siesta, the supporting categories featured
some welcome new faces: pained "Malcolm" dad Bryan Cranston;
mysterious "Alias" dad Victor Garber; "Sex" lawyer Cynthia Nixon; and
earnest "West Wing" sidekicks Dulé Hill and Janel Moloney. "Scrubs"
doctor John C. McGinley, who would be evenly matched with Cranston in
a contest for Funniest Man on Television, didn't make the cut, but
you can't have everything.

"I am completely surprised because it is such a grown-up thing to do,
to get an Emmy nomination," an exuberant Jennifer Garner said after
learning she was a contender for the lead drama actress honor for
ABC's "Alias." Though she won a Golden Globe this year, she didn't
expect an Emmy nomination and slept through the announcement, tired
after a long day on the set of the movie "Daredevil." There was an
even better surprise in store for Garner as the series picked up a
total of 11 nominations, including one for her co-star Victor
Garber. "This past year has been so unbelievable and wild," Garner
said.
