"Monster-in-Law" Review

By Steve Rose, The Guardian

SPOILERS!

2 out of 5 stars

Cert 12A

The return of Jane Fonda, after an absence of 15 years, is about as big a comeback as the movies can expect these days. But what project could possibly befit this living legend? The answer, sadly, seems to be none, so Fonda has opted for this female-oriented Meet The Parents knock-off instead.

Jennifer Lopez is a part-time dog-walker (no, really) who spots, then woos the man of her dreams (Michael Vartan). Practically the first thing he does is take her to meet his mother, a fabulously wealthy ex-TV host played by Fonda, whose retirement issues are only exacerbated when Vartan proposes to J-Lo in front of her. Thus, the ruination of their nuptials becomes Fonda's mission. Power dressed and coiffed to terrifying extremes, she displays a vindictiveness that would be considered psychopathic outside of pantomime. There's very little else to laugh about, though.
