Charlotte "Charlie" Honeywell (Jennifer Lopez) hat einfach kein Glück mit Männern: Doch kurz bevor sie den Glauben an die Liebe verliert, trifft sie Dr. Kevin Fields (Michael Vartan). Er ist jung, sieht gut aus, ist charmant -- und er will sie heiraten! Es gibt nur ein Problem: seine Mutter! Viola Fields (Jane Fonda) ist eine kontrollsüchtige Karrierefrau, die gerade ihren Job als Nachrichtensprecherin verloren hat. Aus Angst, auch noch ihren Sohn zu verlieren, beschließt sie, das junge Glück auseinander zu bringen.
