Aussie stars roll out for G'day USA ball

Bindi Irwin shared the red carpet with Cate Blanchett, Russell Crowe was fashionably late and there was a taste of Kazakhstan at the glamorous G'Day USA Penfolds Icon Ball in Los Angeles.

More than 1,200 celebrities, business leaders, politicians and star-spotting Aussie commoners came together at the black tie event, which has become one of LA's hottest tickets.

... Other celebrities who attended included cricketing great Steve Waugh, swimmer Kieren Perkins, actors Michael Vartan, Rachel Griffiths, Simon Baker, Jonathan LaPaglia, Kate Beahan and Kimberley Joseph, The Wiggles and cinematographer Dean Semler.

AUSTRALIAN films made $40 million at the local box office last year, 4.6 per cent of all takings.

Australian films most likely to do well this year include December Boys, starring Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe; Hey, Hey, It's Esther Blueburger, starring Toni Collette; Romulus, My Father, starring Eric Bana; and Wolf Creek director Greg McLean's mad croc follow-up Rogue, starring US heart-throb Michael Vartan.

He scared audiences witless with his punishing serial-killer movie "Wolf Creek," the most successful Australian film of 2005. Now all eyes are on the "splat pack" director's follow-up, "Rogue" Ð a big- budget horror movie about a killer croc, starring Hollywood actors Michael Vartan and Radha Mitchell alongside rising young local star Mia Wasikowska. It's slated for release in August.
