Michael Mentions 2005

I've missed Kitchen Confidential. I know it isn't really groundbreaking
TV, and I know its goose is pretty much cooked, but it is just plain
funny. Reuniting Alias pretty boys Bradley Cooper and Michael Vartan
was a genius idea on this too-many-cooks-in-the-kitchen episode. The
writers even tossed in a little aside where Cooper (as his character
Jack) says they are so close it is like they've worked together before.
Clever. And there was a nice lesson learned — in a feud like this one,
it is always the innocent ones who get hurt. Poor Jim in that ice
chest, after his friends had previously banished him to the "idiot
hole." But at least the dopey newbie who makes Woody on Cheers look
worldly got the line of the night: "Can you help me get the sardines
out?" Also it was very smart to give Vartan — who was born in France —
a chance to show off a French accent. Sexy and cool, makes sense that
Mimi would jump at the chance to jump him. Ooh la la.

A Boutique Bonanza
Hollywood Actor Michael Vartan was a surprise guest at Nightclub
Boutiques 4th Birthday Party, taking a break from filming of the
new Greg McLean film Rogue. The normally media-shy star of Alias
was this time relaxed and popular with the local ladies.

TV critic's choice for Monday

What's cookin'
"Kitchen Confidential" (7:30 p.m., KMSP, Ch. 9) may seem like an odd location for a spy reunion, but that's exactly what you get when Michael Vartan visits his old "Alias" co-star Bradley Cooper on tonight's episode. The chances of Jennifer Garner showing up and ordering sushi seem slim.

Michael Vartan rises from the dead
By Kristi Turnquist
Vartan's Agent Vaughn was unceremoniously killed off on "Alias" -- though the show's producers tiresomely want us to keep wondering whether Vaughn's really dead (the show is, whether Vaughn is or not). But sacre bleu! The tres beau Monsieur Vartan pops up as a French chef on "Kitchen Confidential." Maybe he can turn up the heat on this falling souffle of a sitcom. Watch Vartan and his old "Alias" castmate Bradley Cooper at 8:30 p.m. Monday on Fox.

Wonderful ways to woo

Best way to practice French in the dark
Cher, cher, quelle domage. However, you have gotten better at it, since the impression you are making is finally closer to Maurice Chevalier than Pepe Le Pew. But your inner Michael Vartan is nowhere in sight. What? You didn't take her to the last PROVIDENCE FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL? Zut alors! Over 10 days, a record 3655 tickets were dispensed for 44 screenings, many of which were sold-out. The films weren't all by unknown indie up-and-comers, either - Jean-Luc Godard's recent Notre Musique was screened, as well as Christophe Honoré's controversial Ma Mère. So start practicing your Christophe Gans, sans dangling Galoise, and maybe you'll be ready to exercise it with her next year at the ninth annual film festival, scheduled for February 23-March 5 at the Cable Car Cinema.

Watch Kitchen Confidential Already!
"It's insane how much fun we had. Alias fans are going to die." That's the verdict from Bradley Cooper on his recent reunion with former Alias costar Michael Vartan on an upcoming episode of Kitchen Confidential, in which Michael plays a snooty rival chef. "I think they actually moved it up to the next new episode because it's so good," he told me at the Fox bash. A rep at Fox confirms it's true. Bradley and Michael's ep airs when the show returns Nov. 14.

Cheers and Jeers
"Cheers" to Kitchen Confidential for cooking up a mini Alias reunion. Michael Vartan
(whose character was apparently killed in the ABC spy drama's season opener) reteams
with former costar Bradley Cooper in an upcoming episode of the Fox comedy. Vartan
will play a seductive French chef named "Michel." But is that his real name?

Monster's Ball
JoBlo.com interviews "Monster-in-Law" star Jane Fonda
By Thomas Leupp
What was it like working with Michael Vartan?
Michael touches me so much. He’s a good, good, person. And like all interesting people, there’s a tremendous amount of pain underneath.
What do you mean?
He’s had a difficult life. And it’s what makes him vulnerable and interesting. I just want to put my arms around him and hold him. He’s just great.

Jennifer Lopez Talks About "Monster-in-Law"
Jennifer Lopez on "Monster-in-Law," Working with Jane Fonda, and Her Career
By Rebecca Murray
On Chemistry with Her “Monster-in-Law” Boyfriend, Michael Vartan: “Michael always kinds of scores in these kinds of roles. You just know if you get Michael Vartan you’re lucky because he is just like the perfect boyfriend person, right? Just because he’s so sweet. He’s very genuine. He’s very real. He doesn’t have a bunch of phoney airs about him, you know? He’s French. He speaks French all of a sudden and you’re like, ‘Ooh he speaks French…’ You know what I mean? There’s just something about him that’s very kind.”
