King of hearts in animal care
HOLLYWOOD heart-throb Michael Vartan has a soft spot for animals, as demonstrated by his New Year's Eve party choice.
The Alias star, who arrived in Melbourne yesterday, passed up an invitation to celebrate New Year's Eve at the Playboy Mansion, opting for a quiet night at home with his dog.
And yesterday, during a photo shoot for Confidential, he showed concern for a baby bird that had fallen out of its nest and made sure it would be cared for by professionals.
Vartan has visited Melbourne six times and considers it his second home.
"I love it here, it is a fun town," he said.
"There is always so much to do. I have never had a bad meal here and that includes the top restaurants and the small cafes."
He is in town to participate in the Aussie Millions poker tournament at Crown on a visit sponsored by an online gaming site.
The competition begins tomorrow and Vartan will be taking it extremely seriously.
"You have to have full concentration," he said.
"Every hand is an opportunity to learn something about your opponent as long as you don't lose concentration.
"Poker started off as a hobby, but it has become more of a passion.
"I am still not very good, but I am gradually recouping some of the losses that I made when I started playing and knew absolutely nothing."
Vartan will be in Melbourne until January 22 and said he would definitely make it to a few matches of the Australian Open tennis.
He has a relatively free schedule, due to the scriptwriters' strike in the US.
"I have a few things on the horizon, but nothing definite, and they are all in their very early stages," Vartan said.
"I would love to do some dark films, but I seem to have been pigeon-holed in the romantic comedies."
