Fine tuning: Kitchen, Prison, Closer

Alex Strachan, CanWest News Service

Kitchen Confidential
Global and Fox, 8:30 p.m.

The lukewarm Kitchen Confidential, Fox's ensemble comedy based on chef Anthony Bourdain's autobiography from Sex and the City producer Darren Star, returns with a mildly amusing outing in which one-time Alias star Michael Vartan plays an arrogant, womanizing French chef who steals Bourdain's one-of-a-kind fish recipe and beds Bourdain's colleague Mimi (Bonnie Somerville).

Kitchen Confidential fans familiar with Alias will get a kick out of seeing Vartan affect a French accent, but a lot of the French cliches in Kitchen Confidential tonight are stiff and forced.

Alias fans will also get a kick out of tonight's cast reunion of sorts. Bourdain is played by Bradley Cooper, who played a key role opposite Vartan (the two vied for Sydney Bristow's affections) in Alias's early seasons, but viewers who don't get the connection will want a meatier meal than this.
