Making a Mountaineer Out of a Mole

RedEye Q&A with Jennifer Garner and Michael Vartan

by Miki Turner, for RedEye

RedEye Q&A

Thanks to ReneeDY, Vartan Ho #1976, for the scan! Transcript courtesy of Lugia.

RedEye caught up with "Alias" stars Jennifer Garner and Michael Vartan at Disney's California Adventure, where they were promoting their show.

Although they spend most of their time on screen chasing spies and other bad guys, off-screen Garner, a West Virginia native, and Vartan, who was born in Paris, are avid sports fans.

I hear you're a big college football fan. Who's your team?
GARNER: The West Virginia University Mountaineers!

How long have you been rooting for them?
I was really into them during the Major Harris years. We've kind of been limping along since.

You've got some pretty good college teams in Southern California, are you into USC or UCLA?
Well, I'm looking for a pro tea. I don't understand why we don't have a pro team. I haven't switched my allegiances, but if we did have a pro team, I would be a season ticket-holder.

If you could go one-on-one with any athlete, who would it be?
I guess [Pete] Sampras because he's great and he seems like a nice guy, and he's retired, so maybe he's a little off his game.

You kick a lot of butt on TV. How do you stay in such great shape?
One fight at a time! No, I just work out like anyone else.

Rumor has it that you're a pretty decent hockey player.
VARTAN: Yeah, I love playing hockey. I love to watch the game, but I'm a big sports fan in general.

What women's sports do you like to watch?
Tennis. I think women's tennis in the last 10 or 15 years has become much more interesting than the men's game.

Do you have any favorite players?
I like the sisters [Venus and Serena Williams]. They add a little grit, a little flavor -- that's nice.

How do you feel about no football in L.A.?
It's the second-largest market in the country and there's no football team! C'mon, Disney!

Well, there's always the Chargers -- just a two-hour drive away on a good day.
Exactly! I don't care, we just need a team in L.A. They could be called the Los Angeles Clownheads.
I'd buy their gear, and I would root for them like no other!
