JENNIFER GARNER
THE SEXY SPY IS BACK
INTERVIEW. The most glamour double agent on TV is finally back in the season 3 of Alias. This cult show has made Jennifer Garner a star. She is going to be the heroine of three movies in 2004.
Disbanding a terrorist net, stealing a nuclear weapon, rescuing a colleague from a horrible death, all this on high heels… Too easy for Sydney Bristow! In only a few episodes, Alias has become "the" unmissable action series all around the world. Why this success? A beautiful heroine, half-Nikita, half-James Bond, a well-chosen cast and breath-taking scenes. Hollywood could not remain insensitive to Jennifer Garner any longer… After starring in Catch Me If You Can with Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio, then in Daredevil, the 31-year-old brunette has signed for three main roles. In 13 Going on 30, she will be a thirteen-year-old girl who finds herself in the body of a thirty-year-old woman. Happy Endings, with Lisa Kudrow, will be made of ten intertwined stories. But first and foremost, she is going to be the electrifying Elektra, the sequel from Daredevil that has been imagined "only for her". Yet, she signed for five more seasons of Alias, grateful toward the producers who trusted her. Tons of projects that could go to her head… Not at all!
Do people recognize you often on the street since the success of Alias?
People say hello sometimes, but I come from a town where everybody does so. That feels less weird to me than to others. People are nice with me and I haven't had stressful moments yet.
When you were doing auditions, did you think you would be offered a physical role?
I would have never thought that I'd be taken seriously in this field! But I have an insatiable appetite for action.
Hanging on a cable makes you so happy?
What's better than including action in the portraying of a character? It's a great adrenaline rush each time. And at the end, you realise that you achieved something that you did not think you were able to do at first.
How do you prepare for extremely physical scenes?
I've met coaches and I learnt a lot about nutrition and how the body works. I have much more energy than before. And if I'm needed for eighteen hours, I'm like "Go!Go!Go!" I practice every day – except today (laughs). I eat every three hours. I don't eat too much sugar. I'll never go back to eat a doughnut for breakfast and a Snickers bar at eleven!
Your life has been totally turned upside down for the last two years…
That's crazy! The professional choices I'm being offered, being talking to you… This is unbelievable! When I did auditions before, it never worked.
How do you deal with celebrity?
I've worked eighty hours last week. And I ended at 7:30 this morning. I didn't go out a single time… I am absolutely not aware of what others think.
Do you think you're a model?
Sydney is. At least, she's a real model to me. She's honest, she's a faithful friend and she gives 100 percent of herself in anything she wants to do.
What do you think of all these female characters that are able to beat up men?
What's great today with women from the new generation is that they're able to top men, while staying extremely feminine. That's a fantastic evolution.
For how long did you sign for Alias?
Six years. But we're not at the end…
Six years on a TV show, that's a very long time!
No, it's not. I signed and I'm not the kind of person who gives up her commitments. It's not because I made a movie (Daredevil) that I have nothing left to learn. There's a lot to learn on a TV show and I have much respect toward the people with whom I work. Therefore I'm glad to be working on Alias.
But this prevents you from accumulating movies….
Yes, this show is too much intense to do something else at the same time. But we work for nine months and then I have three months off.

IN LOVE WITH A FRENCHIE
In the Vartan family, I ask for the nephew! Michael did not choose music like his aunt Sylvie or cousin David Hallyday. This charming fair man, who grew up in Normandy, migrated to Los Angeles to join his American mother. After a few roles in TV shows (in Friends, where he was Tom Selleck's son and Ally McBeal), he got the role of his life: that of Agent Vaughn on Alias. [...]
