TelevisionWeek's National Critics Poll
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- "Arrested Development" was chosen
as the best television show of 2003 and "Angels in America" was named
best miniseries, movie or special in a poll of the nation's newspaper
critics which will be published January 5, 2004 in TelevisionWeek,
America's television business weekly.
Now in its 20th year, the TelevisionWeek Critics Poll is recognized
as one of the most authoritative surveys of its type in the
television industry. More than 40 reviewers from across the United
States and Canada participated in the poll, including Matt Roush from
TV Guide, Robert Bianco from USA Today, Tim Goodman from The San
Francisco Chronicle, Jonathan Storm from The Philadelphia Inquirer
and Mike McDaniel from The Houston Chronicle.
No. 1 pick "Arrested Development" was selected for its wry, witty
sense of humor and nontraditional format. It is the first time that
a comedy series has topped the poll since "Frasier" won the honor in
1998. Ellen Gray of The Philadelphia Daily News said the show
is "smart, funny, and like all the best comedies, just a little bit
heartbreaking in what it has to say about families and how they
interact."
Also for the first time, four cable shows made it into the top 10,
led by Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with John Stewart," which
finished No. 2. "Nothing in the media has a more dead-on take on our
culture, and nothing on the planet is funnier," commented Rick
Kushman of The Sacramento Bee.
It was a good poll for newcomers as well, with CBS' "Joan of
Arcadia," winning best drama on television. The series finished No.
3 overall, beating out old favorites like "24" and "The West Wing."
TV Guide's Roush said, "Despite the weekly appearance of God, this
isn't the least bit preachy or self-righteous."
Critics were united in their dislike for NBC's "Coupling," naming it
the worst show on television. "As funny as a broken condom" is how
The Toronto Sun's Bill Brioux described it.
