PROMENADES D'ETE Translation -- Page 3

Many thanks to Hélène for her hard work! :)

The four join the others …

… who are waiting for them by the bus.

(Jordi and Audrey laugh)

François (showing the letter to Audrey): “Was that a joke, too?”

Audrey: “No, on the contrary.”

(She gets in the bus).

Caroline (seeing Thomas getting dressed in his bedroom): “Sorry…”

Thomas: “Caroline, can I talk to you one minute? Wait… Don't be fooled by appearances!”

Caroline: “About what?”

Thomas: “ About Magali…”

Caroline: “You do what you want, you're free. She's very beautiful and I think it's normal for you to be together. I had already noticed that she was fond of you.”

(Bus honks)

Caroline (getting in the bus): “Anyway, this is a happy ending…”

Thomas: “Are you serious?”

Caroline: “Absolutely.”

Magali and Thomas are holding a big box after the performance on stage…

Magali (to Thomas): “ We were great tonight, don't you think? It's the first time I had such a good time. You really sounded in love. (Insisting) Thomas, do you hear me?”

Thomas: “Yeah, I do…”

Magali is crying because she is very moved by actress Vivien Leigh in “Gone with the wind”…

Scene between Orlando (Thomas) and Rosalind (Magali)…

Thomas joins Caroline who is reading g on the grass…

Thomas: “ What are you doing here?”

Caroline: “ What about you?”

Thomas: “I almost 'killed' my eyes trying to find you in the audience.”

Caroline: “How is the play going?”

Thomas: “Magali is playing as if she were Vivien Leigh. François is furious!”

(He takes her hand)

Thomas: “ Give me your hand… Give me your hand, there's nobody. Tell me that you love me. Just tell me that you love me a bit, then.”

Caroline: “Of course, I love you.”

Thomas: “Say only “I love you”. Say “I love you”!”

Caroline: “Stop it. That's silly.”

(He stands up and turns around)

Thomas: “Were you writing to me?”

Caroline (laughing): “No!”

Thomas: “I have already written a letter for you…”

Caroline: “Where is it?”

Thomas: “ I always carry it with me…”

Caroline: “Show it to me.”

Thomas: “I would never dare.”

(She picks the letter from his jacket)

She reads: “I love you enough to be miserable all my life, I love you enough to shed myself, In love enough to lose myself, in love enough to hang myself…”

(maybe this sounds a bit clumsy in English, but it does sound beautiful in French.)

Caroline: “This is poetry!”

Thomas: “Stop it!”

Caroline (carries on reading): “… Let's start our forbidden embrace over and over again.”

Thomas (upset): “You bloody idiot!”

Caroline: “Maybe we could see each other tonight, if you want.”

Thomas: “Where?”

Caroline: “ I don't know. We'll see… Are you mad at me?”

Thomas: “What about Stéphane? (Someone calls Thomas in the distance) S***, I'm late!”

Caroline (to herself): “And I am lapsing into childhood…”

Everybody is packing after the performance…

On the bus, Thomas gets up and joins Caroline…

Off the bus…

Isabelle: “ Hey, Thomas, I know it's full moon tonight but you really go too far…”

Caroline (to Isabelle): “What business is it of yours?”

Isabelle: “Well…”

Caroline (to Thomas): “Come on, go to bed now.”

Thomas: “You don't kiss me goodnight?”

Caroline: “Wasn't it enough for you?”

(Once in her bedroom, she opens the window)

Thomas (grinning): “ Do you want me to join you?”

Love scene

Young man playing the flute

By the river…

Magali: “Thomas, Caroline is here!” (to Caroline): “Your ring is beautiful.”

Caroline: “Stéphane designed it for me.”

Magali: “Thomas, tell us Lorca's poem!” (La Femme Adultère)

Stéphane: “Come on, bud, tell it!”

Thomas: “No, I don't want to!”

Magali: “Please, you promised me!”

Caroline: “Yeah, that would make my day!”

Thomas: “Okay, then…”

(He tells the poem)

(Sorry, but translating it in English would be a real “massacre” compared with the French version. There is certainly an English version of this poem somewhere. All I can say about the poem is that its content is highly (and ironically) related to what happened the night before by the river between Thomas and Caroline. That is why he is looking at her so kindly and that Magali cannot help crying.

Stéphane: “What's wrong with you, Magali? She's crying…”

Caroline: “She's in love with Thomas!”

Magali (upset to Caroline): “Oh, you!”

Dinner inside…

The man who is singing asks Eric, who is sitting in the corridor, if he feels all right. Eric answers him and everybody is stunned because it seems that it is the first time he speaks. Everybody gets up while Thomas and Caroline remain in the room.

Caroline and Stéphane in their bedroom…

At the hotel (arrival)…

Caroline and Stéphane go down the stairs. Thomas says “Hi” to Caroline.

Xavier (to Thomas): “Do you want to share your room with me?”

Thomas: “No.”

Xavier (a bit hurt): “Very nice…”

Xavier and Thomas in the bedroom…

Xavier: “I really think that this tour ends in a very sad way. Not a single party, only work and this because of François. He thinks he's a saint. Have you ever seen him smile?”

Magali: “Thomas!”

Magali (with Jordi and Audrey): “We're going to hide in Caroline and Stéphane's bedroom.”

Jordi: “They have a big cupboard!”

Audrey: “Hurry up, they're in the bathroom!”

Xavier (to Thomas): “Are you coming? Maybe we're going to have fun…”

Getting in the cupboard…

Thomas (smiling): “That's stupid. It's going to scare them. That's completely stupid.”

Xavier (to Thomas): “Come on!”

(They close the cupboard)

Audrey gets out: “I can't breathe!”

(They close the cupboard again, letting Thomas and Magali inside)

Thomas (trapped with Magali): “You bastards!”
