PROMENADES D'ETE Translation -- Page 1

Many thanks to Hélène for her hard work! :)

(Here is my English transcription of the main dialogues of the movie, especially those between the two main characters, Thomas (Michael Vartan) and Caroline (Valérie Stroh).

What you can hear in the opening credits:

Thomas is auditioning so as to be admitted in the famous French theatre school 'La Rue Blanche'.

Member of the jury: “ Is it the first time that you audition for La Rue Blanche?”

Thomas: “Yes.”

Jury: “ The classic scene?”

Thomas: “ Les Caprices de Marianne.”

Jury: “ Go ahead.”

Thomas plays the scene with a fellow comedian.

(Exit the fellow comedian)

Jury: “ Thank you. What is your free choice?”

Thomas: “ La Femme Adultère by Federico Garcia Lorca.” (The Adulteress?)

TITLE

The young actors arrive at the place where they will have to rehearse a Shakespeare play.

(Introductions)

François, the director of the play, introduces Thomas “who plays Orlando” to Magali “who plays Rosalind”. Then Audrey, Isabelle and Jordi (a Spanish man who is supposed to have worked on his Spanish accent to get rid of it so as to sound more French).

François: “I discovered Thomas at the Rue Blanche audition.”

The girls are surprised because they do not have their own bedrooms.

Then Xavier arrives (the one wearing glasses) and introduces himself.

Lunch outside…

Caroline arrives while everybody is having lunch.

Thomas: “Who is she?”

Xavier: “ It's Caroline, the stage designer's wife (his name is Stéphane). She's here on holidays.”

Magali: “She's beautiful!”

Thomas: “She's a bit old!”

Xavier: “She's thirty.”

Then Caroline introduces herself to Thomas:

Caroline: “ I saw you at the Rue Blanche audition. The way you told the poem (Lorca) was remarkable.”

Thomas: “Thanks.”

Caroline (to Magali): “ You're the one who plays Thomas's lover?”

(Magali nods).

Caroline: “ That's a golden part!”

Rehearsing outside…

Thomas and Magali are rehearsing together. The director interrupts them to tell Magali that she has to sound more 'in love' with Thomas without showing it really because her character is supposed to be dressed as a man in the play.

Isabelle (about Magali): “She doesn't seem to be very talented on stage and off…”

Audrey (angry): “ Don't expect me to talk badly about my friend!”

Isabelle: “ I see…”

Caroline and Thomas in the “costumes” room…

Caroline (to Thomas who is looking at the window): “ You're looking at my husband? Go and have a look at the costume he designed for you.”

Audrey and Magali (from outside): “ Thomas, do you want to go for a walk?”

Thomas: “Yeah. Where?”

Girls: “By the river.”

Thomas (to Caroline): “Are you coming with us?”

Caroline: “Yeah.”

On their way to the river…

Magali (to Thomas): “Is that right that you're going to enter a (theatre) school?”

Thomas: “I failed the Conservatoire audition so I'm looking for an answer from La Rue Blanche.”

Sitting under trees…

Audrey: “Isabelle is single.”

Magali: “So am I.”

Audrey: “ Then there are only single souls here!”

(Laughs)

Caroline tells them that she has no children and that she has been married for five years.

Thomas: “It's great here.”

Caroline (making fun of him): “ It was high time that you went out!”

Magali and Thomas rehearsing in his bedroom…

The guys are talking about Stéphane (Caroline's husband) about his flirting with Isabelle:

Xavier: “He's not wasting his time!”

Then the guy calls them from the window to join outside.

Magali (upset): “ We can never have some peace and quiet!”

(Dancing and singing)

Then François arrives and tells them that they have to be more concentrated on their work.

Rehearsals…

François complaints about Jordi's Spanish accent.

Thomas is writing…

Caroline: “Did I scare you?”

Thomas: “No… Are you going to bed?”

Caroline: “ Yeah. I heard that your bed was in the alcove…”

Thomas: “Yeah. How do you know that?”

Caroline: “I know a lot of things… Goodnight.”

(She kisses him)

Isabelle and Stéphane are flirting under Thomas' window…

Outside rehearsals…

Xavier (to Isabelle): “Stéphane's looking for you.”

Isabelle: “When?”

Xavier: “Right now. He's in the house… Isabelle… Be careful…”

Isabelle: “Why?”

Xavier: “About Caroline…”

Isabelle: “Nonsense.”

Xavier (to Thomas): “Have you noticed that Magali was fond of you?”

Thomas: “What about Caroline?”

Xavier: “She keeps an eye open for trouble…”

Thomas: “Why doesn't she leave her husband?”

Xavier: “ She's too middle-class. I've already told you that your analysis (of the situation) is not right : she loves him her way.”

Dialogue between the two wardrobe mistresses…

Thomas tries on his costume with Caroline…

Wardrobe mistress: “ He looks like the perfect Prince Charming!”

Caroline (to Thomas): “ Do you have time to go for a walk?”

Thomas: “Where?”

Caroline: “By the river.”

By the river…

Caroline: “François cast very beautiful girls, don't you think?”

Thomas: “ Not really.”

Caroline: “You don't think so? Which one of the three do you prefer? There must be one that you prefer.”

Thomas: “I don't know. Magali is maybe the prettiest one…”

Caroline: “She's really nice.”

Thomas: “Yeah, maybe, but comparing them is not my problem.”

Caroline: “Concerning the boys, it's less interesting. Except two or three of which you are part…I regret what happened between us. Don't know what happened to me.”

Thomas: “Me, too. Don't know why I did that.”

Caroline: “ I kissed you first.”

Thomas: “Yeah, that's right. Thought it was me!”

Caroline: “You wouldn't have dared, right?”

(He kisses her)

Thomas (his head on her knees): “I 've never felt so good…”

Caroline: “ Don't you think we'd better go?”
