Kevin and Bean on LA's KROQ
October 18, 2002
Transcript of MV & BC Interview
Transcribed by Jen @ Glass Heart. Thanks! :)
I've dang done it and crossed over to the totally weird and obsessed camp. I recorded this radio interview on October 18th (Friday of "Dead Drop" episode airing). Listened to it so many times, I decided to type a transcript. I wasn't going to post it, but I wanted to share my love for Michael Vartan and Bradley Cooper, who play Vaughn and Will (respectively) on Alias. This is from the ever-entertaining morning radio show, Kevin and Bean, on LA's KROQ. Kevin and Bean, the hosts, are accompanied by Lisa May and Ralph, entertainment reporter.
Key:
KROQ -- Kevin & Bean, Lisa May, Ralph
M -- Michael Vartan

Interview:
KROQ: Hi guys. How are you?
M + B: Hey... + What's going on?
KROQ: Which one's the bad guy? + Who is the bad guy? + Well, every time we have the chance we're always talking people into getting Will rubbed out, remember? + Well, yeah, but it's not because he's a bad guy. He's just wrong for Sydney, that's all.
M: Ooh....
B: Wow. Wow. Good morning, good morning. I'm so glad I woke up this early to feel this harrassment.
(Laughs)
KROQ: Bradley, we love the Will character, we just think that Vaughn and Sydney are just meant to be together. + That's all I'm talking about. Exactly. Yes.
B (pretending to be hurt): Right.
M: Well, they certainly have the same profession, so...
KROQ: You're new to the spy game. + They're families are both really F-ed up, so you know...
(Laughs)
B: Hey, man, Will's family is ridiculously messed up. You just don't focus on that.
KROQ: He's got a point. + Is this your back story?
B: Yeah, I've got a tremendous back story. I'll bring this up to JJ, "Let's talk about Will's family."
KROQ: Bradley's got an extensive inner monologue going on.
B: Obviously you're not catching all the nuances....
M (interrupting): ... the subtlty...
B (continuing): ... the subtlty of my performance.
(Laughs)
KROQ: Well, we should back up one step, since we haven't talked to you guys before, and tell you that you couldn't be talking to huger Alias fans. We're obsessed with this program, in fact I think we scare people away with the way we talk about this show. But, uh, it was so amazing to see what your Will had to go through when he was getting beat up, roughed up, and black eyed, with the whipping and the beatings. It was unbelievable.
B: It was a blast.
KROQ: It was unbelievable. I can't even imagine what that was like.
B: Well first of all being a huge fan of the show myself. I must have seen the pilot, like, twenty-nine times. It was almost like a running joke, and then to the end of the year, to be able to sit in the same chair that Sydney was in the pilot and be tortured by Suit and Glasses was like a weird, morbid dream of mine.
(Laughs)
KROQ: You strangely loved it.
B: Yeah, I was kinda oddly was really excited by it.
KROQ: Now, Michael, let me ask you this: do people come up to you on the street all the time and give you their opinion on what they think the characters ought to be doing, ought to be going next?
M: No, actually, most of the people just come up and say, "Hey, we love your show, so..."
B: Thank God. Yeah, we keep away from some of them who'd be like, "Man, we wish you were dead."
(Laughs)
KROQ: That's us. + We're the guys saying that. + We're those people. + But I like Will now.
B: Well, I know where you are. I can call you in the morning.
KROQ: I like Will now better, now that he's in on Sydney's secret and stuff. So there's less of that kind of double life stuff going on now.
B: I mean they both have totally different relationships with her. I really don't think that one conflicts with the other.
KROQ: Vaughn looks a little jealous. + Do you think that there's any three-way, triangle going where they both are in love with her? Or am I just imagining that?
B: They both are in love with her but I think it more complicated than just a triangle. I mean they met last week in the elevator, and there's just a lot more going on that a simple, "I'm jealous of you." Will has a huge fascination with the CIA. There's a lot of stuff going on.
KROQ: And maybe there's a little attraction going on between Will and Vaughn.
(Laughs)
B, pretending to be a little disgusted: (beat) What are you talking about?
(Laughs)
M: How long is this interview?
B: What, now I'm gay?
KROQ: That was subtle but I think I caught it. + Wouldn't that be a story line?
(Laughs)
B: I'm a gay, hated, heroin addict. This is fantastic... I'm an icon of...
(Laughs)
M: Can I have your guys' phone number?
(Laughs)
KROQ: Tell me that in real life you guys haven't also fallen in love with Jennifer Garner, the way we have. I mean, I can't even imagine how you guys into work and not tried to break up her real-life marriage.
B: I'm telling you, you just spoke the truth.
(small Laughs)
M: Should I call in in a separate time to get my own interview or...? How's this working?
(big Laughs)
B: No, no. Jump in. Jump in.
M: Okay.
KROQ: Feel free. + (Laughs) + You know it's funny, we got an email from people who know how much we like Jennifer Garner, because we are really obsessed with her. "Hey, Kevin and Bean," in response to Michael Vartan being on the show, "Hey, he's a huge hockey fan, he played in the celebrity game during last year's All-Star weekend. That gives you another topic to talk about in addition to how cute Jennifer Garner is." Thanks. + We needed that.
M: Yeah... So anyway, about Jennifer Garner... + (Laughs) + Yeah. No, we're, we're... Oh, look, Bradley's...
B: No. I'm giving you your time, man.
M: He's giving me the evil eye now. Like he's...
B: I'm not even looking at... (short pause)... you.
(Laughs)
M: Wow, wow.
KROQ: He can give you the evil eye without even looking at you?
M: Yeah, wow. He's got that, you know...
B: I guess I'm actually more powerful than I thought.
(Laughs)
KROQ: Now, Michael, tell us about what's going to happen on Sunday. What's the episode "Dead Drop" about?
M: Sunday, uh, if anyone watched last week, hopefully a lot of people did.
KROQ: We did. + Oh yeah.
M: Sloane will continue spiraling down this, uh, a strange, uh, strange, uh... dead d-... maybe not dead d-- (stuttering...)
B (interrupting): Wow...
KROQ: Yeah, he's being set up big time. + Now you know why we didn't give you your own interview, Michael.
(Laughs)
B: That was actually impressive.
KROQ: Now, Bradley, tell us what's going on on Sunday night. Since Michael declined apparently. + (Laughs) + Come on, let Michael try again. + I'm just kidding. So he's going crazy. + Sloane thinks he's being haunted by his dead wife. + (Michael yawning distractingly in background) + Because he killed her right?
M (disinterested): Yeah, okay.
(Laughs)
M (pretending to stutter): Vaughn--Vaughn, will--will... I don't know.
(Laughs)
KROQ: See now you're flustered.
(Laughs)
M: I'm literally sweating.
(Laughs)
KROQ: It's so nice to see that happen to someone else instead of us for a change. That's refreshing. + Yeah, you sold it, thank you. + Well, boys, despite this interview, we couldn't be happier to talk to you. + (Laughs) + We couldn't be happier about the show and we beat our listeners over the head with Sunday nights at nine o'clock on ABC with the Alias. And just as an aside, Michael, fantastic work on the One Hour Photo.
M: Oh, thank you. Thanks a lot, I appreciate it.
KROQ: We really enjoyed that this fall, too. You were terrific in that movie.
M: Thank you.
KROQ: Well, Bradley Cooper, hope that Will dies... and thank you for coming on with us today...
(Laughs)
B (in feigned disbelief): Wow.
KROQ: I would learn why they give actors scripts today. + Oh, stop it, the guys look great. Michael, thank you. Bradley, thank you.
M + B: Thanks a lot, guys.
