OH, NO! Move Oscars to February?
by Tom O'Neil, host of GoldDerby.com
This is an excerpt of a longer article:
MEANTIME, THE EMMY RACE IS AFOOT NOW and GoldDerby guru Diane
Werts of Newsday warns, "I'm on my soapbox. If this isn't the year of cable in the
Emmy Awards nominations, then there's no justice in 'The Practice'-land. (Heck, judging
by that show, why should there be?)" Diane's soap box is formidable - she's president of
the Television Critics Association.
In her GoldDerby column, Diane roots for the "sensational" work of "Michael Chiklis,
CCH Pounder and the writers/directors of FX's explosive new police drama 'The
Shield'" and she calls the Sci-Fi Channel's "Farscape" "the most consistently written,
produced, acted, fantastically imagined and psychologically layered hour on the tube."
She adds, "And I hope Fox Broadcasting Co.'s '24' gets a passel of nominations simply
because it looks like a cable series. What higher compliment can a critic pay a network
show these days?"
But if '24' earns nominations at the expense of another new drama series, don't expect
Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly to cheer. In his GoldDerby column, he confesses,
"I'm a full-on 'Alias' supporter, but am already girding myself for the disappointment of
seeing '24'--good, but not nearly as entertaining as 'Alias'--take slots that the mighty
Jennifer Garner and her tensile supporting cast deserve" when nominations are
announced on July 18.
About the comedy races, Tucker adds: "I think 'Friends' has a lock, but will also wager
that 'The Bernie Mac Show' has dented enough Academy voters' consciousness to win a
spot on the ballot. ('Bernie,' of course, deserves the win.)"
