Ten Shows to Watch: Alias

By Tim Conroy

Even with six networks in the running, I could find only five true standouts while compiling my annual list of the top 10 new series of the fall season (they're the ones appearing on these two pages). As for the rest, I could have added NBC's Crossing Jordan, Fox's Pasadena, ABC's Philly and CBS's Education of Max Bickford. I should admit that I haven't received preview tapes for the WB's reality series Elimidate Deluxe and two optimistically recast sitcoms: the WB's Off Centre and NBC's already-much-malaligned Emeril. But the following should provide enough Bam! for your buck.

Viewers who find Dark Angel too plausible will love Alias, about a pretty and brilliant grad student named Sydney (Jennifer Garner) who was recruited as a college freshman into a supersecret branch of the CIA. Unfortunately, she's dying to share her secret with her cute fiance (Edward Atterton). Plus, she has a troubled relationship with her mysterious father (Victor Garber). While ladling in generous helpings of butt-kicking action, creator J.J. Abrams fills the premiere with the same smart-girl angst he perfected in Felicity. Since the pilot came in too long, ABC is running it without commercial, so for an hour and six minutes, cheapskates can pretend they get HBO.
