Family History
Michael's father, Eddie Vartan, and aunt, Sylvie Vartan-Halladay, were born in Sofia, Bulgaria. Eddie's father, George Vartan, worked for the French Embassy and his mother was of Hungarian decent. Moving to Paris, France, in 1952, the Vartan children spoke no French and quickly learned this language.
In his adult years, Eddie became a famous French jazz musician and was a music producer for RCA-France. He married Michael's mother, Doris, although they divorced when Michael was five years old. Eddie's second wife, Florence, gave birth to their son, Nicholas, in 1983.
Michael's father passed away on June 19, 2001, from a cerebral hemorrhage and is buried in France.
Sylvie Vartan, a famous French actress and singer, married a French rock star, Johnny Hallyday. Together they have a son, David Hallyday, who is also a musician and actor.
In 1990, Eddie and Sylvie formed a charitable organization for the Children of Bulgaria.
Doris Vartan, Michael's mother, remarried in 1984. Her husband, Ian La Frenais, is a famous British comedy writer and is
well-known for his work on various British TV series. He also co-wrote the movie The Commitments.
Miscellaneous factoids
Michael is left-handed. He's a musician and plays guitar (I wonder what kind?). Being an all around artist, he also paints. Michael plays hockey twice a week and has been quoted as saying that he'll only sacrifice this time if he's filming.
